Specialist Approaches we can use

I’ve found that, typically, what brings out the best in people, and creates a path to sustainable long term progress is an integration of some or all of the following, guided by your priorities:

1. Evidence Based Therapies

Frameworks, methods and techniques with a solid evidence base, from EMDR, CBT, Schema Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) have the power to be hugely transformative in my experience, either as stand alone models or integrated with other approaches

2. Nervous System Regulation

We can take practical actions to support your body mind and brain to more easily self regulate - physiologically and emotionally -  by drawing on Somatic Coaching, polyvagal theory, interpersonal neurobiology and Occupational Therapy’s bio-psycho-social framework

Relational empowerment

3. Relational Empowerment

We can draw on approaches such as Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) and NVC or Compassionate Communication to help you transform and update old ways of relating to others with far more nuance, wisdom, empowerment and wholeheartedness.

4. Creative “Parts work”

Internal Family Systems (IFS), Voice Dialogue and Archetype work facilitates self compassion, self leadership and healthy integration, rather than self criticism, shame and internal conflict. I love "parts work" as it's not only transformative but creative, embodied and playful. Therapy that's enjoyable, even fun?! Absolutely!

5. Skills and Strengths Coaching

Emotional Intelligence and Strengths Based Coaching help to develop essential skills for personal, relational and professional success, as well as solid self esteem and confidence in who you are and what you bring.

6. Mindfulness, Positive Psychology and Attention Pivots

Mindfulness, Attention Training and Positive Psychology help people pivot towards constructive modes of attention such as looking out for signals of safety and opportunities for soothing, peace or joy in the present moment. This restores balance to the brain’s hardwired evolutionary “threat detection bias” that tips us away from noticing what’s safe and good.

7. A re-connection to nature - including our own

We can draw on Eco-psychology to reconnect to the reality that we are mammals with 1000’s of years of organic intelligence inside and around us. Long before modern psychotherapy, humans have gained restoration, insight and meaning by deliberately spending more time with nature. We can re-attune to the cycles and seasons of nature to create a more grounded, intuitive and sustainable approach to “doing life”!

Therapy becomes so much more pleasurable, uplifting, inspiring and grounded when we find simple or creative ways to connect with nature during sessions.  You might like to experiment with having a session on the phone while strolling in a nearby park, as a really good opportunity to give your brain, mood and whole body a re-energising break from all the sitting indoors that we tend to do so much of in our lives. I've had feedback from so many clients who've expressed the same thing - happy surprise to discover how heading out for a very meaningful collaboration on the phone while walking actually suited them far more than sitting in yet another room! Re-energising is the word I hear several times from people every week!

And did you know that EMDR originated outdoors, walking in a park?!

Choosing the right approach for you:
Nature does not hurry,
yet everything is accomplished.”

— Lao Tzu

The sessions where we met outdoors helped me feel much more equipped and confident to deal with unexpected scenarios. Her calm and friendly coaching, and practical strategies, have taught my brain to realise it doesn’t need to be hyper alert all the time, as I’ve now got tools and confidence to handle things as they arise. That means less worry and less avoidance and much more ability to just be present.”
