Walking the path from struggle to strength

I asked my clients to write a few words of feedback, advice or encouragement for people thinking about whether to start CBT, as they are the experts from experience. I’m sure you’ll be inspired about possibilities for change, when you read how far others have come!  I hope it also gives you a more detailed sense of how I could help you on your life journey, from those who have walked the path from struggle to strength themselves. There are no identifying details, not even first names or initials, as, to me, it‘s of utmost importance to protect peoples’ total confidentiality.

Phone and skype sessions – my clients’ feedback

I started to have phone sessions with Eleanor, only because her face to face appointments were booked up! However, somewhat to my surprise, I found it offered lots of advantages. I would sit at home in peace and quiet with a cup of tea and the same big notebook each time. It made it feel more integrated with my every day life, to be sitting in my own home. Also I tend to think best when I write or draw diagrams, so that was easier while listening on the phone than it might have been face to face. I could reflect in private before and after the sessions. I didn't feel in any way that there was a reduced connection with Eleanor by phone- she was always very warm and supportive and attentive.”

I found CBT with Eleanor over Skype to be incredibly helpful. The way I did it was to make use of flexi time with work, so I could have a morning or late afternoon session when my concentration was at its best, rather than being tired after a busy day. Overall I feel much more positive in my life than before the CBT. It's not some kind of 'magic bullet', but it fundamentally changed some aspects of how I think and feel. I also have some specific tools, which help in challenging moments. And, more generally, even when I do feel unhappy or stressed I'm more aware that it's just a passing thing, rather than taking it too seriously and pulling it into some huge theory of everything being wrong!”

I worked with Eleanor over skype, sometimes when I was travelling away with work, I found the whole process very interesting and think it's a journey I'll continue to develop in different ways throughout my life. I think everyone and anyone could benefit from some CBT and so I often recommend to my friends to start CBT, and I’m so pleased for their sakes that some of them have. I think it was because they've seen how I'm happier in life and in myself!”

I met with Eleanor for one face to face session and then moved to the phone, simply because it was better for my budget! As it turns out, Eleanor’s teamwork style is so uplifting and her awareness is really spot on, so it was like being in the same room with her in a way, only I could scribble lots more notes that have been brilliant to look back on!”

Skype sessions turned out to be a really good fit with my life, not only because I didn’t have to travel or find childcare, but because I could get off the phone and immediately practice what Eleanor had taught me with my kids and partner, much to their benefit and relief…and mine of course!! Our family dynamic is so much more constructive now.”

CBT by phone worked out very well. We could be flexible in varying the time of the appointments, and I could also be flexible about where I was when I spoke with Eleanor. Once I found a quiet room at work, and another time sat in the park close to my office, which was a really practical way of linking sessions into my very busy life and they became a great space to clear my head in my hectic schedule.”

Working with Eleanor over the phone was a big advantage as it meant I didn't need to take travel time on sweaty transport to get to sessions! Instead I could put that time into following up our sessions with practice of the techniques Eleanor taught me, which helped me to get much more skilled at them.”

I finally discovered the real reason to be alive: is to enjoy it!”
